I have a real nice MM 705 that has a growl in all gears...so I assume differential??
I have not started to open it,as it feels like it could be a HUGE job. Should I get over my initial fear?? or just launch in....with my "average abilities".

Our familys first "big" tractor was a MM 705. The 4 other MMs, were 4 bottom tractors, the 705 was considered to be a 7 bottom in decent gumbo and and 8 in loam or uphill soil...Anyway I might get into the rear end on my 8N, but not the 705..thats a big tractor..

As I recall there is a triangle lube fill plate down by the shift lever. Have you peered in to see if you can see anything amiss?

Have spent many an hour on a G-705. Beautiful sound to that engine, especially with the muffler off and idling slow. We had to take the muffler off to put it in our old low shed.

Had to rebuild a governor once. When first started it was idling so slow it barely sustained running. Expect it was idling between 100-200 rpms. Drew a crowd in the mechanic shop as people couldn't believe how slow it could keep on running.Might have been even slower RPMs.

BTW, ours was an LPG model. It was our first tractor with hydraulics and was a replacement for a gasoline GTB.

average skills aren't the biggest problem...everything on a Minnie takes a crane to lift...drop that rear end on your foot and you'll think hiring job out was dirt cheap compared to what dr gonna charge you for a set of crutches.

Too big to mess with without big tools and experience. When something on the 8N gets away from you, its an irritation. When something on a tractor that big gets away, it could be fatal.

A 705 rear end is basically a U, I would try to find out what is wrong with your's, before I decided anything. If you have bad gears I would look for a donor tractor. It doesn't have to be a 705, it can be a GB GVI any thing that has the adjusting screws for the ring gear. Your axle housings might be bigger but they will interchange. If you are going to make a puller out of it I would use a U trans-rear end. They are lighter.

I wouldn't be too sure about the differential, though that's logical. It could be that the gears in the transmission are worn out or they have some rust pitting. Does it growl in road gear? If not, I wouldn't be too suspect of the diff. Also remember that a 705 has big fenders bolted to the rear end case and that tends to amplify or exaggerate what sounds are there; that is, it may not be that bad. It is a large task to undertake.
