There are a number of plants that can withstand freezing without damage. It has to do with the cell structure of the leaf of the plant.
The product at the link below is supposed to give many plants a few extra degrees of temperature protection. I'd never tried it. I expect many of us could get an extra couple of weeks from our garden by using it in the spring and in the fall.
