was out in the backyard here in central nj planting some tulip bulbs, We have had some heavy frosts and I am surprised how well the lettuce is still hanging on, One is blackseeded simpson and one patch is grand rapids.

My wife and my late mother-in-law used that lettuce mixed with cream or evaporated milk, sugar and vinegar. Then we ate it over mashed potatoes. Her mother used the cream when they were on the farm in Perry county. Sure was good too. Hal
 
Are you ready for this------it is probably ICEBERG lettuce.

There are a number of plants that can withstand freezing without damage. It has to do with the cell structure of the leaf of the plant.

The product at the link below is supposed to give many plants a few extra degrees of temperature protection. I'd never tried it. I expect many of us could get an extra couple of weeks from our garden by using it in the spring and in the fall.

Larry, that's pretty amazing. Above is what I do every fall. Recycled sliding door lites over my beds. Allows me to harvest all winter. The least hardy plants won't make it but we do well with the others. Sloped glass is better but level glass is almost as good. Just takes raising the sides on your raised beds to allow for the plants.
