I have a Case 646- the hold back going downhill works great. The earlier 646's may not have had the hold back feature built in to the hydraulic control valve. I have a Case 444 with no hold back built in, and it also has a grinding noise going downhill- it's normal and won't hurt anything. What happens if you release the travel pedal going downhill? You could probably add downhill holdback by replacing your hydraulic valve with a newer one- Jack
