Case 646 Engine Braking

A friend just gave me a Case 646 that was in serious need of some TLC. I've been slowly bringing it back to health and have it running pretty reliably. I've noticed that going downhill I hear a grinding noise and the driveline gives almost no engine braking. The tractor pulls well enough and the loader arms work fine. The brakes also work, but I've driven other hydrostatic systems and the amount of engine braking is pronounced. Does anyone have familiarity with this tractor's drivetrain, and is engine braking something that it's supposed to do?

I also have a 646, and going down hill mine don't have hardly any hold-back either. I just use the brake so as not to over speed the systems too much.

That"s normal for a Case. We have a 446. It"s not hydrostatic, but straight hydraulic. There is a position on the speed control lever called "retard" that is supposed to control downhill speed by restricting return flow from the hydromotor.

I have a Case 646- the hold back going downhill works great. The earlier 646's may not have had the hold back feature built in to the hydraulic control valve. I have a Case 444 with no hold back built in, and it also has a grinding noise going downhill- it's normal and won't hurt anything. What happens if you release the travel pedal going downhill? You could probably add downhill holdback by replacing your hydraulic valve with a newer one- Jack

That's good to know. I have a 30 ft rise from one end of my property to the other, so I'm always going up and down. If I release the drive pedal the grinding noise gets louder. If I use the brake downhill then put in enough drive pedal so that the internals are all moving at the same speed everything smooths out. Looking into the availability of the newer valve would be worth it.
