What happens to dummies who don't wear seat belts when they crash and end up with closed-head injuries or paralyzed? Most of 'em become wards of the state. So I guess it's OK for the taxpayers to pay to feed them and wipe their backsides, but it's not OK for "the government" to tell them to buckle up so they don't become a burden on the taxpayers in the first place.
I have what I think is a reasonable proposal: If you don't want to buckle up, you should be able to sign a form on your driver's license saying it's OK to put you down if you're seriously injured in an accident. Sort of like the organ donation thing. When the police arrive on the scene, they pull out your driver's license. If you've signed the form, and the cops think you're too far gone, they're authorized to put you to sleep right there on the spot. No ambulance, no emergency room, just a slug from a .357. Save the taxpayers a bundle. The upside is if you sign the form you'd never have to worry about another pesky ten dollar seat belt ticket. Would work for bikers who don't like helmets, too.
