Got a ticket today from the cops

Funny sort of this guy was looking for a person to get by the way he did things. He was behind me on a 4 lane then pulled past me and then dropped back behind me again. Turned on his light and I pull over. He walks up to me and said do you know and I siad yes I plan to stop at the parts store for a new bulb as soon as I get to town. Drivers side turn/brake light is out. He then asked where the front plate was and I said it is up there so he looked. Spare tire sort of hides it so have to fix that. What he wrote the ticket for was no seat belt which yes I do not wear but he had to look hard to even see that so as I said he was looking for a person to write a ticket to. Oh well $10 fine maybe unless I get the doctors note I should have gotten years ago

I got a 25 dollar ticket for following to close.
With court cost it was 130 bucks.A seat belt violation will probably increase your insurance
premium also.

Old, be glad you didn't get that ticket in Ohio, ten dollars might get you smelling salt to use when you pass out from hearing cost. LOL

$68 I think it cost me Memorial Day.

US12 in Niles I passed the trooper setting in the middle and saw him pull out behind me, so I reached over and put on my seatbelt and thats when he turned on his lights and pulled me over. He asked if I knew why he pulled me over, and I said probably so. He said that in Michigan, zero tolerence for no seatbelts during holidays. Thats what he said, "...during holidays".

Might have been $65, might have been $68, but the next cheapest listed was like $125 I think. I got off cheap I guess. I still don't wear one, except during that stretch and when in Illinois.

Rich(little poorer),

Kinda think you got lucky with the "little" fine. Around central Illinois they "look" for seatbelts to stop AND then check everything else out. Gotta keep the economy going I guess.

Jim

No it will not stop me paying you but here in the last 3 months every time I think I can pay you something happens so I can not. Yes you will get payed but after the wife's car radiator blew then both front axle bearers went out on my truck then etc etc. Yes you will get payed and I was even getting ready to send you it then the wife says here this is what you have for the month and that as $13

Last February coming in to Minneapolis in a snow storm I rolled my pickup on the freeway. Cop was a real meanie and wrote me a ticket for "failure to use due care"
I was huffed and decieded to fight the ticket.
June rolls around and I finally go in to the hearing officer. I tell them I want to go to go to court. 6 weeks later I go in to see the City prosecutor. He calls my name and we have a little confab. I tell him I have a good case and want to roll the dice before a judge. He tells me he's a paid professional who's trained to beat people like me in court. He offers me a deal: plead guilty, pay the $145 fine and if no other moving violations within 1 year it does not go on my record. I say No. I will face my accuser before the judge.
He calls me back a few minutes later and offers me this:
Plead guilty to doing 64mph in a 55 and pay the $145 fine.
I'm thinking WHAT?? I didn't get a ticket for speed.
He tells me 64 in a 55 does not go on your record at all. We need the money.
I'm pretty much dumbfounded but I agree and pay the fine.
What a screwy system for sure.
I would have liked to confront the ticketing officer.
No cause for them to be so insolent, arrogant and mean.
But I took what I thought was the easy way out.

Got pulled over last time, $95 ticket, officer claimed I touched one of the dotted white lines on a curving 4 lane highway, was running alone, 60 in a 55 zone at 11;30 PM... said touching the dotted line indicated I had lost control of my truck.
Was driving my daughters car one time, got ticket for air freshener hanging on mirror - was told it would block veiw of pedestrians

Yep now days they try to get $$ any way they can be it right or wrong and few will fight it. If my doctor will side with me be it only $10 I'll fight it about time we the people stand up to the guys who vote for there own pay raises but vote to not give the guys in the service or on S.S. etc a raise. Time we the people say no more of this but few have the guts to stand up for what I believe

Wow, you mean you did not know that they write exclusions in some laws for medical exemptions.. Shame on you!!!!

Years ago cop pulled me over, started writing
a ticket for headlight out. I told him he needed
to write one up for himself, when he turned to check his lights, he turned around and tore my ticket up, and said "darn they were good when I left the station", "better get that headlight fixed tomorrow", "and have a nice day".

I heard once that the Michigan State Police automatically stops any vehicle with two or more equipment violations. Since the cop couldn't see your front plate, that made two. He probably would have let the brake light slide until he passed you and couldn't see a front plate. And my guess is the seat belt violation is a lesser offense than the equipment violation he could have given you.

Wouldn't it be easier to just put on your seat belt rather than try to find a physician who will give you a note?

We are a tough crowd. After all of the years and proof that seat belts save lives and make sense, we still have folks that can find an excuse not to click.
I have heard men say it cuts their shoulder. You should see a shoulder after it has flown through a windshield at 30-70 MPH. I have heard woman say it messes up their hair. You should see their hair after the same experince of flying through a windshield. Morticians seem to do a good job making it look good again.
Oh well, we still have people that smoke and the negative results of that have been known for 50 years.
It is just hard to train some folks. LOL

We were driving home out of town, car was oncoming so wife dimmed lights, and it looked 'odd' but hard to tell with the oncoming traffic. Second car went by did Uturn, put on lights - pulled wife over, gave her a fix-it ticket for a burned out headlight.

Wow. He asked if we knew we had a burned out light, and it was a little hard to tell the truth without sounding stupid - I'm sure he's hear a 1000 times oh that just happened; but really, that bulb burned out as he was cresting the hill coming at us!

I really don't understand the thinking. In 35 years of driving, I have yet to hear a valid reason for not wearing a seat belt. Yes there is that one in a million chance that in a fluke accident the belt did more harm than good, but I'll wager those odds.
Many states ticket the driver now if the passenger doesn't have a belt on. One of the temps that was on my shift asked me if I would drop him off on the way home. Not a problem until he got in the truck. I noticed he didn't put his belt on so I told him he had to. He stated he would not and didn't believe in them. Still no problem,"no belt, no ride". The prospect of a 3 mile walk at midnight changed his belief and he reluctantly put the belt on. Never asked me again for a ride though.

Spent 23 years pulling cars over, so I'll tell a couple odd stories.

Going down the road one night and I see something odd- a bright whitish/orange glow coming from under a car. Do my best "TJ Hooker" Trooper turn and chase the car down. The witch behind the wheel is screaming at me from the second I get within ear shot about how I had no cause to pull her over and how she's sick of "you pigs" harassing her. Right about then I reached in and opened the door an pulled her out as the flames started shooting out from under her car. Put the fire out too in a minute. Catalytic converter was blocked or something and set the car on fire!

'Nuther time I'm riding along in the middle of nowhere and round a corner to find a car on fire and this guy outside screaming "MY BABY! MY BABY!!!" Well, I about krapped myself and grabbed the fire extinguisher and got nicely singed trying to get into this car and save a baby. Finally I realize the guy is telling me it's not a real baby, the CAR is his BABY!!!

Another time after waiting weeks we find this local drug dealer with a bad tail light. Pull him over and his smokin' hot girlfriend says to me, "Yeah, you guys are real cute doing this." In my one of moment quick thinking I replied, Ma'am, the fact you find us physically attractive is unimportant, please get the registration." Man, she was Pee Owed!!!!

Your going to go waste a Doctors time ( Obviously your not having to pay for the visit) for $10 lousy dollars, and you wonder why there is no cola increase, or medical costs are so high. Get real, you all ready where giving a break on 2 violations.

Ya the only reason I got out of the one for the brake light not working was because I told him it did not work and I was on my way to pick up a bulb to fix it. Being a retired truck driver I notice when things do not work as they should pretty fast and I noticed the light on the dash flashed odd so I looked when I was at the Lowes store

Old,

I don't know what kind of medical condition you have that you shouldn't wear a seat belt, nor is your medical condition any of my business, but...

I will guarantee you when your body goes from 70mph to 0mph in 6 feet you will still be in a better medical condition using the seat belt to decelerate your body mass, than a steering wheel compressing your sternum to the point it touches your spine and every one of your ribs snaps like a toothpick. Then those ribs start puncturing lungs and other internal organs. Or in an offset barrier crash and the rearview mirror stem punctures a hole through your forehead into your brain.

Any police officer on this forum can confirm what I just stated, accident scenes are not pretty.

Now being in America every one has freedom of choice, I am just not that risky.

Rick

I agree to disagree with you. Sad how they do not tell people how many die because of the seat belt and after seeing a person cut in half by one they scare me to death. As for going from 70 to zero I understand that since I do still ride a motorcycle.

Old,

No problem on the disagreement.

A seltbelt (lap belt) will not cut you in half if properly positioned across your pelvis. Now, if you ride in a very reclined position you can "submarine" under the lap belt upon impact. Then the belt is on your abdomen, due to the lowered body position. The belt goes into your mid-section as your upper torso and lower torso pivot around the belt, typically breaking your spine in half. Or in worse cases, the body can get torn in two.

This is one of the reasons all racing harnesses are 5 point systems, with the crotch belt, being the anti-submarine belt.

Now given enough speed, all bets are off, seat belt or not.

Like I said before, I am not very risky, and depending on the day, sometimes not very lucky.

Rick

The guy I saw cut in half was hit in the side of his car just behind the door so that took the seat belt mount and ripped it out of the car and that is how he go cut in half. When the cop opened up the car door the guys top half fell out of the car but his bottom half stayed in side

I got pulled over in Illinois last week. The officer had someone stopped in the right lane, so I merged to the center as soon as I could and ended up less than one car length behind the car in front of me. The officer said I was following too close. When I explained to him the only reason I was in the center lane was to avoid running into him parked on the right shoulder, as required by law. He thought about it for a minute, warned me not to follow so close "because it could rain" then let me go. First time I"ve been pulled over in 20 years.

I agree with most that seat belts are in general a good idea. I however am opposed to seat belt laws. Not wearing a seatbelt doesn't harm anyone but you. Therefore it is a personal choice not to wear one. The government has no business telling us how to live our lives if it is our own bodies at risk. It starts with seatbelts and ends with Orwell's 1984.

With some of today's small cars seat belts do no good.

Another thing that I hate. Is getting a no seat belt ticket. From a cop on a motorcycle.

Billy, strapped into a late model small car, you're far safer in a collision than in almost any car of sixties, belted or not. Crush zones, collapsible steering columns, reinforced doors, air bags and shoulder harnesses all make new cars safer than the old dinosaurs.

What happens to dummies who don't wear seat belts when they crash and end up with closed-head injuries or paralyzed? Most of 'em become wards of the state. So I guess it's OK for the taxpayers to pay to feed them and wipe their backsides, but it's not OK for "the government" to tell them to buckle up so they don't become a burden on the taxpayers in the first place.

I have what I think is a reasonable proposal: If you don't want to buckle up, you should be able to sign a form on your driver's license saying it's OK to put you down if you're seriously injured in an accident. Sort of like the organ donation thing. When the police arrive on the scene, they pull out your driver's license. If you've signed the form, and the cops think you're too far gone, they're authorized to put you to sleep right there on the spot. No ambulance, no emergency room, just a slug from a .357. Save the taxpayers a bundle. The upside is if you sign the form you'd never have to worry about another pesky ten dollar seat belt ticket. Would work for bikers who don't like helmets, too.

I believe 100% what you saw is true, but it is definitely the exception, not the rule.

Side impact accidents are a whole different animal than frontal or frontal offset conditions.

Earlier I said your body is going from 70 mph to 0 mph in about 6 feet. In a side impact the only thing between you is a 6 inch thick door. The g-force your body is experiences increases significantly. Luckily now there are air bags, and air curtains that help absorb the decel of your body in these cases.

The accident death rate has dropped significantly with the push for buckling up and the increased use of air bags and side air curtains.

BUT, there are exceptions to every rule, and no matter how good vehicles get, there are always accidents where people do not survive.

I know you mentioned you had dial-up. If you ever do get a high speed connection, Youtube has countless videos of belted and unbelted occupants demonstrating what happens to a persons body during an accident.

As a longtime customer of junkyards, I would like to thank people for wearing their seatbelt. I really don't know the previous owners of the cars but trying to remove interior parts, instrument clusters, or stereos while looking at a scalp hanging from the windshield is disgusting. Blood, hair, skin, bodyparts left in the car while the occupants are ejected is gross. That was the rule back in the eighties. Nowadays, that sight is rare. You can look at the outside of the car and tell if it was a fatality. Back then folks died with very little exterior damage to the car/truck. Most of the time now the windshield is salvagable!

An older fellow i once knew swore he wouldn't be caught dead in a seat belt! He wasn't!
Leaving a bar one dark night, he pulled out of the lot, into a stream of fast traffic! He was driving an old, rusty, Dodge Dart, since he couldn't afford a better car.
The other car hit the left front corner of the Dart, the driver's door popped open, he fell out, the cars slid together, and old Sam was crushed beyond recognition!
Yep--he wasn't caught dead in his seat belt, as he'd cut them out and threw them away!
nice friendly old guy, Sam was, but dumber than a box of rocks!

I usually wear mine but I see all these motorcycles going by my house every day and think to myself, how can the government mandate wearing them and yet you drive a motorcycle with absolutely no protection or chance at all to survive a crash and that is just fine. I got pulled over in Wa. one time in a little town speed trap. Was going to hit me up for $125 for going 35 in a 25 mph speed zone. You come around a corner looking at the 35 mph sign and it turns into 25 and their he sat. Anyway, he saw my wife sitting in back of the pickup without her belt on and fined her $100 bucks. He said he would only write us up for one offense, the speeding ticket which would go on my record or the belt one which wouldn't. We took the belt one.

Ya like these cars now made of scrap iron over one mqade of real steal me I'll stick to the old ones and know I can live afer a crash instead of hope the crash test are correct

Believe me I have seen the test and both sides have there good points and bad. What I hate is the fact that they tell us how many live because of seat belts but they never tell us how many die because of them. I have yet to ever needed a seat belt to stay alive but have seen to many that had them on and died. I have over 1.5 million miles on my record and have yet to see a reason to wear one other then to die doing so

Statistics don't lie. Far more people are saved by seatbelts than killed because of them. Just have to look at how many race car drivers have walked away from truly horrendous crashes because they were wearing really tight seat belts (5 point harnesses). The seat belts actually stretch and have to be replaced every 2 years. Dave

What the prosecutor didn't tell you was the officer didn't show up for the hearing. So few people challenge traffic tickets that it usually is a total waste of the officer's time to show up at court. If you had stood your ground the ticket would have been dismissed.

Probably.

Years ago I was traveling with my Dad when we came upon a police car in the median. The officer pulled Dad over and asked him if he wasn't following the car ahead a bit close. Dad said "I wasn't until he saw you". The cop joked with Dad about that and gave him a verbal warning. I think he was mostly just slowing traffic with his presence rather than trying to write tickets.
