A seltbelt (lap belt) will not cut you in half if properly positioned across your pelvis. Now, if you ride in a very reclined position you can "submarine" under the lap belt upon impact. Then the belt is on your abdomen, due to the lowered body position. The belt goes into your mid-section as your upper torso and lower torso pivot around the belt, typically breaking your spine in half. Or in worse cases, the body can get torn in two.
This is one of the reasons all racing harnesses are 5 point systems, with the crotch belt, being the anti-submarine belt.
Now given enough speed, all bets are off, seat belt or not.
Like I said before, I am not very risky, and depending on the day, sometimes not very lucky.
