Not even 100 years, my Dad was a young man during the depression and used to say that in the deep south they did not know there was a depression because nobody ever had any money any way. Most people in the US worked from daylight till dark for basic necessities and that didn't really change until after World War II. My Mother was raised on a hardscrabble farm in South Georgia in the 20's and 30's and did not have a pair of shoes until she started school. Grandpa died in 1963 and he stilled rolled his own cigarettes using brown bag paper.
