They were used to unload boxcars before the advent of enclosed hopper cars.Cardboard with steel straps inside were nailed across the doors.Called steel-corr (I believe)???.Boxcar door was opened and the carboard was ripped out. Then when the grain or fertilizer stopped flowing, this device was hooked to a winch to pull the grain out the door(.A two man operation----I get the run the winch !) Never had the pleasure(lol) but I saw them used. Haven't seen one for about 50 years. Talk about earning a buck ! That was back when men were men.lol.
