DO contact your insurance carrier AFTER talking to your lawyer.
Even if your insurance company sends in their lawyers you should keep your lawyer. The insurance company's lawyers are there primarily to protect the insurance company's interests. You need your lawyer to protect you.
I wouldn't worry too much about finding a lawyer that's friends with the judge. First, its unlikely this will ever reach a court room. Second, who's to say the other side's lawyer isn't friends with the judge? Either side can ask a judge to recuse himself if they think he's too cozy with the other side.
Hire an out of town lawyer. I'd be more concerned about my lawyer being golfing buddies with the other side's lawyer.
The plaintiffs will sue several people. At first they'll just be fishing to find out which defendants have the deepest pockets or the highest insurance limits. Those with money or assets are the ones they'll proceed against. They won't waste time or money chasing money someone doesn't have.
Your lawyer may suggest filing a counter suit. Our legal system isn't perfect. Innocent people often have to spend a great deal of money to defend themselves against unfounded lawsuits.
