Not quite the answer you wanted, but I do crop ins. work and have had good luck with the little hand held GPS. The Garmin Etrex Legend. It is the cheapest model they have. Some of the more expensive models do not have an acre measurement function, so more dollars spent does not help you.
I start mine at a corner, then ride around the patch to be measured on my ATV. It even stores the measurement along with a little sketch of the field measured.
