Its indeed possible to tweak most VR's to increase charge rate butttttttt I just dont get into describing it over the net as it can involve spring tensions and air gaps and I dont have the specs. I've cleaned/buffed/polished the internal VR relay contacts which may help and no other adjustemnts utilized. It could be minor things such as poor grounds (BOTH genny and VR need good grounds) or bad connections. That being said, if it charges plenty with the FLD post direct shorted to ground that tells me the genny is fine so its EITHER a VR problem or else, again, a bad VR ground. Make sure the belt is good and its tight and Id insure all good wiring connections ESPECIALLY the VR's ground, try a jumper wire direct to the grounded battery post to the VR for a ground n see what happens.
