"A" or "B" system ??? An A based charging system uses internal connection to a brush (or a third brush to energize the field. A "B" style uses an internal ground, and an external voltage to the f terminal for energizing. Some early fords are A type, later are B type. If the gen wires are disconnected, and if the brushes are held up off of the commutator with a slip of plastic, an A generator will conduct from the Arm terminal to the F terminal (less than 5 ohms). If it is a three brush, it will conduct from the third brush to the F terminal.
If it is a B system the F terminal will show less than 5 ohms to case ground, and the Arm terminal will show open (with the brushed off of the commutator. Jim
