Never bought a car out of state but have bought a few, well more than a few, tractors out of state and so, trailering for me has always been the way to go. If it was a car or truck I was going for and I wasn't going to trailer it, that would mean someone would have to take me there, then there would be getting all of the legal paper work and then hoping I would not have any mechanical problems on the way home. If you trailer it, you can go alone, not have any paperwork to worry about in another state and not have to worry about breakdowns on the way home. I say trailer it. LOL.
