For a given displacement, and at full power, a non-turbo diesel should pump the same amount of air as a gasoline engine, assuming they are running the same RPM. But at less than full power, as Owen states, the throttle plate comes into play, so diesels thrive on a surplus of air, that is what gives them good economy at part-load. That said, air filters are applied based on more than engine size. The environment can be worse for a tractor than an over-the-road vehicle. I don't think you are wrong to try it; I would put an air filter restriction indicator on it and you should be OK. Dodge pickups with the Cummins diesels had a little indicator that told you when to change the filter. Get one from a salvage yard.
