If you wanted to reply to message number 4 there, then have that message open, and your reply will step to the right and be posted below message #4.
Otherwise, if you are reading the whole thread with the original message open & just hit reply, your message will be the newest one below the very first message of the thread.
There are a couple different ways of looking at messages here, old way, modern way, nested, not nested, etc. It might seem quite jumbled up - and is in a way, but if you explore around, they have options that will fit your way of thinking & it will make sense to your perspective.
I'm an old timer & I like the old way, so I haven't explored too much. :)
