Put two heavy duty cow magnets on the flywheel and turn the engine over slowly by had, if the pieces are not to big, then the cow magnets will bring them up. Make sure not to make a complete revolution with the flywheel as there may not be enough room to bring the pieces up and around with out interfering with the bell housing. Rotate the flywheel until you hear the magnets grab something and then rotate in opposite direction back up to the hole for the starter to see if you brought anything up.
