was bailing yesterday after finally geting a break in weather. stopped tractor to re fill twine boxes. went to restart tractor but just whined like starter not ingaging. tried hammering lightly on starter, no better. tried rocking tractor, no better. took starter off complete gear on starter which ingages flywheel is gone. was perfectly fine, no problems at starting prior, or signs of problem inpending disaster before this. questions are. 1 what would cause this to happen that suddenly other than just faulty gear that broke in half and dissapearded into bell housing?? 2 how concerned should i be about missing parts of gear in bell housing, should i try to fish it out or just replace starter and good to go?? thanks in advance.

I think there is always a concern about further mechanical damage when a part goes missing. If it were me I'd be trying to fish the part out, even if it means a lot of labor. If it did do some damage later you'd have to tear it apart AND purchase repair parts. Better safe than broke and sorry.

More info needed to help us help you. What is the tractor for one thing. If say it is a Ford 8N that is a very common problem and there extra room in the bell housing for just that type of problem. If it is some other tractor you might well have a big problem if you do not get those parts out but as I said more info needed for us to help you help your self

I know most IH tractors have an inspection cover for greasing the throwout bearing on the bottom of the bell housing...

Put two heavy duty cow magnets on the flywheel and turn the engine over slowly by had, if the pieces are not to big, then the cow magnets will bring them up. Make sure not to make a complete revolution with the flywheel as there may not be enough room to bring the pieces up and around with out interfering with the bell housing. Rotate the flywheel until you hear the magnets grab something and then rotate in opposite direction back up to the hole for the starter to see if you brought anything up. Let me know how this turns out. By the way, what tractor are you talking about?

About 2 weeks ago I was using my CaseIH to move some wagons and augers around the yard. Started and stopped tractor maybe 8 times that morning then all of a sudden it does not turn over when turning key. Just then the semi shows up to load wheat so take a strap and pull it out of way. Yesterday I get a chance to look at it so try once more and no start. Wife helps me pull it to shop and I get test lite out to start tracing prob at neutral switch or clutch switch but before I start poking at wires I try it one last time. Puff, it starts right up and has started a dozen times since. I would almost rather have your prob as to always wonder when mine is going to surprise me by not starting .
