A similar situation has happened to me several times lately. So, whenever I give the cashier a $20, I memorize the last three digits of the serial number of the bill before I hand it to them. When they give me change back for a $10 bill, you should see the look on their face when you can tell them some info on the $20 bill in their register. It has saved me some dough more than once, usually in places that barely pay minimum wage.
