I saw a good registered Tennessee Walker mare at a yard sale for $800 about 20 years ago- made the mistake of telling my wife about it. It put us in the "horse business", from which we've never completely recovered.
Wwhen she and 12 yr. old son went to look, son was enthralled with the last remaining $150 miniature Schnauzer puppy in the pen. Lady was moving cross country, needed to get rid of everything living or too big to transport. She told son that if mom bought the horse, she would give him the puppy. 'Course, mom wanted the dog as well, so that sealed the deal in pretty short order.
I wanted to have that smart lady indicted for unfair sales practices, but that got nowhere.
