weird yard sale bargain?

I picked up 7 X 50lb bags of calcium chloride flakes for $5. I was thinking of holding on to them until the next time I need my friendly neighbourhood tire guy to come out for a service call, then hopefully barter with CaCl. Does anyone know what this stuff is worth?

Just keep those bags in a dry place.. Lots of bargains to be found at yard and estate sales.. There was an estate yard sale here a few weeks ago, and several people told me it was a waste of time to go. I decided to stop by at 4 in the afternoon, as they were about to close.. I noticed a Freon jug in the basement... 20 lb jug of R-12... They sold it to me for 2 bucks.. It is full, or very near full..

Not so weird I guess, but I stopped at one about 5 miles from my place and there was a really nice straight Farmall F-12 sitting on the edge of the lawn with 4 brand new tires on it. It was idiling and ran perfect. I asked the lady if the tractor was for sale? She said it was, but I just sold it to the car that was driving out of the driveway for $300. She asked if that was a fair price? What do you even say at that point? I just answered if that was what you wanted, and that is what they gave you for it, I guess it was a good deal for both of you.

I would have probably cried like a baby in front of everyone for missing that......I have always wanted a 12 or 14...

I bought a 7600 Ford with a loader and a NH hay rake at a yard sale in 1982. I still use them but wife won't let me go to yard sales to this day!

I saw a good registered Tennessee Walker mare at a yard sale for $800 about 20 years ago- made the mistake of telling my wife about it. It put us in the "horse business", from which we've never completely recovered.

Wwhen she and 12 yr. old son went to look, son was enthralled with the last remaining $150 miniature Schnauzer puppy in the pen. Lady was moving cross country, needed to get rid of everything living or too big to transport. She told son that if mom bought the horse, she would give him the puppy. 'Course, mom wanted the dog as well, so that sealed the deal in pretty short order.

I wanted to have that smart lady indicted for unfair sales practices, but that got nowhere.

Well.. i see everyone seems to think chloride only rusts rims.. So I'll add what it also works for:

it's $10/bag here (or was earlier this year). We use a few bags a year in the drive/lane/road here.

Seems like in the winter they mix some chloride with mortar (in northern climate) for laying block too.

Have used some drained out of a tractor tire (accidentally used..) as a weed killer.. Probably not the best ting to use it for, but it wiped out all the weeds and grass where I spilled it.

I also have 2 tractors that have loaded tires.. one since 1962, the other since 1967.. and the rims are as close to solid as they were when new.. If maintained, and they don't leak, there really isn't that problem.

But yes, I'd venture to say you got a deal on what you picked up

Brad

I would like somebody like you to give me the fluid to put in my tires. Tire dealer no longer handles it.

Jason: If you ever come down to the St. Paul, MN area (I live just South of the cities), I"ll buy all 7 bags for $50.00, if you are interested.
