Thanks for the advice guys, been very helpful. well it turns out a screw on the point adjustment was broken, allowing the points to shift out of adjustment as i was trying to adjust the carb, and then when i took the mag off to retime it, i must have bumped it enough to finish the job. so now that my points have been readjusted, it works.
