magneto problems

I posted a message about my model A a week or so ago, and this is the current state of my predicament: after fiddling with the card for a bit, adjusting the float and whatnot, i took off the mag to retime it, just in case. Well now i can't get it to spark. by this i mean i followed the directions in the manual where i manually spun the lug to make sure i was on the right cylinder. everything was as it was before, no alterations, and yet all of a sudden I am not getting spark. I've traded out the cap, got new plugs, and i get shocked if the cap is off and i spin the lug. I got new wires, new plugs, and have tried a cap i know to work. I have grouned both the mag and the plug in every combination, and am simply out of ideas of why i am not getting spark. I wouldnt be scratching my head so much if it wasn't working right before i took the thing off! Im sorry this is so long, i just figured I'd explain everything to save time. Thanks in advance to any advice.

When you roll the engine over by hand (take the plugs out), does it make that "snap" sound when the piston comes up to TDC?

Lay both plugs with wires on them on top of the manifold and roll it over, to make sure you really don't have any spark. But if there's no snap from the earlier step, you won't have any spark this way either.

there are some things you can do yourself,1clean an reset points, set at 14thou,use a emery bd,an clean filing dust off with a dollar bill,2 check where coil contacts ground to mag chasses, clean to reduce the resistance,3check condesor,4if impulse dose not work the tractor will start by pulling but not by hand start,5if all of that is ok the only thing left is coil. is it a old one with a varnish finish,or epoxy cassing? email open,or call me at 937-483-8630

Are you sure you are turning it in the right direction if you have the mag off? It should be hard to wind up that impulse spring until it snaps to make a good spark. Turning it backwards may shock you but not show a good spark.

You need to pull No1 sparkplug near the radiator and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Have somone hand crank the engine while you hold your thumb over the plug hole. Once you feel pressure against your thumb drop a long plastic straw on top of the piston. Then have the helper to keep slowly cranking the engine while you watch that straw rise. When it quits rising your No1 plug should be at TDC.

Then remove the cap on the mag and and see where your rotor is pointing. It should be at the No1 plow tower which is in the 1 o'clock area. If its not close to this area you need to pull the mag and then rotate the rotor so it is pointing to the No1 plug tower and your wires on the cap should be in this firing order. Hal

2-1
4-3 The rotor rotates CW.

Thanks for the advice guys, been very helpful. well it turns out a screw on the point adjustment was broken, allowing the points to shift out of adjustment as i was trying to adjust the carb, and then when i took the mag off to retime it, i must have bumped it enough to finish the job. so now that my points have been readjusted, it works.
