My cousin bought a dog for 50 cents in the parking lot of the local cattle auction when I was a kid. He was a Basque Shepherd, and the best herding dog I ever saw. He herded cattle without running them- finally got to where we could just tell him "go get em", and he would go to the far end of the field and round up all the dairy cows and bring them to the barn. Never ran them- if somebody was hesitant, he'd go over and bark a couple of times, and that was it. They soon learned that when Peppy came out, it was time to go to the barn, and he just trotted along behind.
Spawning salmon are death on dogs- an infection called (go figure) "salmon poisoning". We had a creek where salmon spawned, and Peppy got into one. Vet diagnosed it, and sent him home- Peppy was not doing well when I went to school, and when I came home, he was gone. Only time I ever saw my Dad cry.
