On July 4, 1776, the "colonies" were still under the Crown of England. For them--or even a group of them--to declare independence from England was an act of treason, punishable by death. So these brave men who signed the Declaration of Independence risked their lives and their property for something they had yet to experience in their lifetimes: freedom and self-government.
I doubt that any of us has ever taken, or ever will take, so great a risk. Certainly many thousands of men have taken up arms to defend the freedom that was declared on July 4, 1776 by these patriots, and it is our respect for those patriots who declared our freedom, as well of those who have fought to preserve it, that we celebrate on July 4 each year.
