If you do a job , say oil change. Just tossing this figure out as example . You charge $50 . Of that 1/2 is parts . Okay now, your labor COST is pretty much fixed ,say it costs you as a shop owner 20 dollars an hour to hire a guy , taxes etc. So ,if tech spends hour on job,you made $5 on labor ,not much . Now parts mark up 33-45% or so . So if customer brings in own parts , how much of that sale was profit ? Would you rather do a job and make $5 or do it and make $15-20 profit . Takes lot of 5 dollar profit jobs to keep shop open , and feed the kids . If anyone else got paid peanuts in their job they would be crying like no tommorrow. Most saying they let customers bring own parts when they HAD a shop ,keyword HAD !
