I knew a farmer who used to run a hose from the exhaust pipe on his motorcycle into the groundhog hole. He'd let it run long enough for the fumes to kill them. Just make sure the hose is similar to those used by mechanics to carry exhaust fumes out of an enclosed garage.

My neighbor swears that you can kill them by pouring a box of instant mashed potatoes into their hole. Supposedly they eat the dried potatoes and it clogs up their digestive tract when they drink water.

Either of these might be a quick cure for your problem.
