Just to add a bit to G Man's instructions. Hook any load like ign switch or lights to the same ampmeter post as the alternator wire and connect the other amp meter post to the battery. Do not hook any load to the battery side of the ampmeter as any load would read on the meter as battery charge,giving an incorrect reading.
