Mitsubishi 4WD to 2WD Conversion

Our community owns a 4-wheel drive Mitsubishi tractor with a problem in the front wheel drive section. We were considering scrapping that tractor and buying a new tractor. Then it was suggested that we could solve our problem by making an inexpensive modification to the drive mechanism converting it from 4WDto 2WD. Obviously, I'm not a mechanic. Given that the problem is the 4WD capability and that our use of the tractor does not require 4WD, is this a reasonable suggestion? What is involved and are there any safety implications? More information can be provided if there is someone who can offer advice.
