Our problem here is the rocks in our soil. Lots and lots of rocks. They sure help with drainage in wet conditions, but even in mild weather the soil drains so quickly that three weeks or less without rain and it is getting pretty dry. Over the last few years I've been working hard at getting lots of compost into the garden beds mostly for holding onto the moisture better. We've got almost an acre and a half of intensive market garden, so it'll take a few more years to really make a dent. Still, the areas we've got done look sooooo much better in the summertime and take a lot less water to keep them going than the unimproved areas.
