O/t Dry, Dry, Dry

Well, here in southern Missouri we had two very wet years with lots of grass, etc. It has been very dry this spring. Normally we get plenty of rain and then it dries out in the summer. A 60% chance of rain today has been reduced to 40% and I'll bet we don't get any. We'll be alright with the market gardens, since we've got a well full of water. (Pumping it will cost something, though.) If this keeps up we're going to take an awful hit on pasture production.

How are the soil conditions where you are?

We were getting bad but we've had close to 3 inches of rain in the last 2 weeks here in Mid Michigan. I've hauled manure the last few days. Not bad,but I'm staying away from the low spots.

We just about drowned from Oct. til late March. Now its unusually dry. Not a good sign.

We worked up a couple of places in the hayfield and plan on seeding with Cheyenne II bermuda. If we don"t get some rain I"m gonna be spending a lot of time watering it to keep it going through the summer.

Yep we didn't get any rain on Easter so we will have a drought this year or so the Wives tale goes. Yep been dry up here also and I have been watering my plants from my rain barrel which is starting to get low.

Our problem here is the rocks in our soil. Lots and lots of rocks. They sure help with drainage in wet conditions, but even in mild weather the soil drains so quickly that three weeks or less without rain and it is getting pretty dry. Over the last few years I've been working hard at getting lots of compost into the garden beds mostly for holding onto the moisture better. We've got almost an acre and a half of intensive market garden, so it'll take a few more years to really make a dent. Still, the areas we've got done look sooooo much better in the summertime and take a lot less water to keep them going than the unimproved areas.

Ya I know about the rocks. I pick up one and a year later you have 2 in the same place LOL. All my raised beds are filled with 100% compost. That any more is the only reason I even keep the horses. I feed round bales with out a ring so they wast about 1/4 of the hay then in the spring I take my loader and pile it up in a large pile and turn it over about once or twice a month. What I fill my 2 new beds with this year is compost from 5 plus years ago

Here's an update. Late this afternoon the weather acted just like a thunderstorm was on its way. Clouds coming, wind picking up, etc. Everything went according to the usual pattern, including the major drop in temperature afterward. A perfect thunderstorm. The only thing missing was lightning, thunder and rain!
