After being bit several hundred times myself, I have gotten a little immune to their sting. It still hurts when I get bit but the next day there is no sign of the bite. I run a lumber mill and they love to nest in between our green hardwood. The only thing I have found that keeps their numbers down is to aggressively treat them with gasoline or boiling water in the early spring when the new queens are leaving the existing mounds to start new colonies. After that I use a spray of liquid sevin and spray a 30 foot perimeter around my house and that keeps them at bay for the rest of the summer. If you are looking at trying to treat 5 or more acres of ground you can give up now as you might as well be feeding them grits as that high dollar poison that don't work and they become immune to it pretty quick. My 4 year old has been bit probably 50 times as he plays outside all the time. Kids are tougher than you think. Johnny in E.Tx.
