I had an appointment with a NYS trooper this afternoon to discuss some renewable energy equipment that I sell and install. Before I left I asked him about this alledged law. He said they have had several inquiries about this lately. He said they, (sub station in Richfield Spa)called and varified this issue. Here's what he told me. A driver has to be doing some thing really wrong, or acting really belligerent towards the officer to get written for this. The law has absolutly nothing to do with the hitch sticking out past the bumper! It has all to do with restricting the officers view of the license plate.I drive a Colarado with a step bumper. He said that if I had a ball mounted in the bumpers hole he could give me a ticket, if I provoked him. He showed me his F250 with receiver and drop hitch and showed me that as long as the view of the plate was not blocked it was 100% legal.BOTTOM LINE you pi$$ them off you could get a ticket! Hope this ends this discussion.
