Davet - The advice offered below is right on the money! One more suggestion however: Remove the dust band from the starter and have a look at the brushes and commutator. If the brushes are worn all the way down or the commutator is burned this will definitely cause it to crank slow. Regarding a 12 volt conversion, don't worry about belt width mismatch, etc. You can get a 12 volt generator that matches your existing 6 volt and use the old pulley, and in many cases the old generator pulley can be refitted onto an alternator so long as both were made by Delco. But those old Continental flat 6's are easy-spinning motors - it should crank up fine on 6 volts if everything is in good shape. Good luck! ...Bob M
