I never wear my gaffs when pruning or trimming. Almost always on removals. I often perform removals without a rope, but I climb with two steel core lanyards. Trimming and pruning I climb SRT and redirect while aloft as needed.
As for not wearing Gaffs on a removal, wait until you blow the top out of a large tree and it takes you for a ride. When you brace your arms to the stem and slip off and your chest hits those stubs you will be reaching for your gaffs in a second. Been there done that.
