OT Tree Felling

Look how the beavers seem to know which way to fell these trees so that all of them land on the ground. And a picture of me felling a tree on Sat.I'm getting to old to be climbing trees!

Holy stubs batman. Watch yourself climbing with those stubs it is a very easy way to hurt yourself. A guy i climbed with a while back broke a few ribs from a stub getting him in the chest. Also dropping limbs like to catch them and cause issues.

Sort of close to the powerlines, aren't you.. We had a recent incident, 2 men cutting limbs got too close to a 7,200V line.. The news report was so sickening that I will not repeat it..

Hate to be negative,

But, this is a picture of why local Fire Departments and EMS responders have year around work. There is nothing acceptable or safe about that activity.

If you would call a tree removal service who has a bucket truck, they can do that job in a safe manner. The cost could be a lot less then medical expenses, and/or utility repair costs.

Skycarp thanks for your concern,I have twelve years experience in tree trimming and I'm also line clearance certified to be trimming around powerlines.

DavisSC , Its an optical illusion the house service to my back is about 8 feet away and the powerlines to my left are about 15 feet away.
I would not do trees or trim around powerlines if I was not experienced in the procedures. I was taught thru Asplundh Tree Service the largest line clearance tree services in the world.

Tony, quit arguing and get down from there! Don't you know that the unexperienced person sitting looking at a picture always overrules the experienced person actually on the scene. The photo angle just happens to make it look very interesting though.

Thanks for the pics, that one got some good opical illusions. A friend of a friend does that sort of thing, without as much training as you have. Not for the faint of heart!

Ok Tony,

I see how there could be an optical illusion using a zoom lens. I made my living as a firefighter and later as a supervisor. As a result of my training and experiences my views are heavily shaded toward safety. I’ve had to go up into a tree twice to remove a body from a tree after the sawyer had contacted electrical utility wires.

Just a question, does Asplundh Tree Service train their employees to climb and work in trees using the limbs of the trees as their support?

Good luck and stay safe,

Dean

Just a question, does Asplundh Tree Service train their employees to climb and work in trees using the limbs of the trees as their support?

The hundreds of asplundh workers I've worked with and supervised always used Gaffs while aloft. They would have been relegated to dragging brush to the chipper had they used stubs as a ladder like that.

chevytaHOE5674,I can use gaffs but Omaha Public Power District, the utility we are contracted to does not want us to use gaffs that is a good way to get written up.If you are with Asplundh and know Kevin Dove with region 63 ask him if thats the utility companies policy here in Omaha .

skycarp, when you climb you should always have two points of tie in,a climbing rope and a safety strap(commonly known as a chicken strap)you should never leave the ground without your rope and safety strap in use,if you look close I have a safety strap which is supporting most of my weight not my feet I'm not using a climbing rope which is not a safe practice on my part.Your rope and your safety strap support your weight not the limb you are standing on.According to chevytaHoe5674 ou can't climb with out gaffs thats not true.If you are an arborist you know that using gaffs opens a tree up to disease and insects not good when you are trimming and not removing. The utility company here does not want us using gaffs for that reason.I could have used gaffs to remove this tree but you get used to not wearing them do to utility policies.

I never wear my gaffs when pruning or trimming. Almost always on removals. I often perform removals without a rope, but I climb with two steel core lanyards. Trimming and pruning I climb SRT and redirect while aloft as needed.

As for not wearing Gaffs on a removal, wait until you blow the top out of a large tree and it takes you for a ride. When you brace your arms to the stem and slip off and your chest hits those stubs you will be reaching for your gaffs in a second. Been there done that.
