skycarp, when you climb you should always have two points of tie in,a climbing rope and a safety strap(commonly known as a chicken strap)you should never leave the ground without your rope and safety strap in use,if you look close I have a safety strap which is supporting most of my weight not my feet I'm not using a climbing rope which is not a safe practice on my part.Your rope and your safety strap support your weight not the limb you are standing on.According to chevytaHoe5674 ou can't climb with out gaffs thats not true.If you are an arborist you know that using gaffs opens a tree up to disease and insects not good when you are trimming and not removing. The utility company here does not want us using gaffs for that reason.I could have used gaffs to remove this tree but you get used to not wearing them do to utility policies.
