Sounds like he uses the chemicals, & doesn't till the soil much. This saves a lot of water for the plant.

Today's planters are pretty good at exactly placing the seed into damp soil. If you studied the planter workings, you would be amazed.

Corn is naturally good at going down looking for water, as long as you can get it to sprout.

If you tilled your garden, raked it, planted shallow seeds in dry soil, and start watering so the plants never develop deep roots, then you have to keep watering... ;)
