Hey guys, soda is great at removing the paint dirt and grime. It does leave the surface smooth but thats one of the advantages, it doesn't harm the metal like other medias. It doesn't create heat either so no warpping. You do need to make sure it is all removed before painting or as said above primer will not stick. One way is to wash it down with water real good. Another way os to use After Blast Solutions sold at atozsodablasting.com, either way you must get it off first. Check out this site, timstractors.com. He has all his soda blasted. Anyway, soda is great for paint removal.
