All you guys talking about FREE TRADE. This is US Gov't statistics. What do you make of that.

Foreign Press and Public Relations Division : INT 822-503-9093
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) announced that exports for all of 2000 reached US$ 172,621 million, rising 20.1 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, imports recorded US$ 160,492 million, a 34 percent increase from a year earlier. As exports offset imports, the trade balance experienced a surplus of US$ 12,129 million, exceeding the original forecast of US$ 10 billion.

Note: That's a trade surplus of US$ 12,129,000,000.00. ( More exported than imported )

This is fact so I thought I would introduce it to the argument. You better hope that others in the world don't boycott the US. This is one of the reasons your economy has been so hot the last few years and your currency value is leading the world.
I don't disagree with the sentiments being expressed but its hard to argue against free trade with these results. I think the big question is "What good does this do for the masses". Proponents will tell you it is 'jobs'. But, is it? I think possibly Free Trade does more for multi-nationals. Proponents will tell you it increases competition and that, that is good. What seems to be happening rather is that since goods can move freely around the globe large corporations are buying their competition and becoming so big and powerful they will have an unbelieveable impact on governments and hence the masses(people). Good examples are J.I.Case, International Harvestor, Ford (tractors), New Holland all owned by Fiat. Most of the Japanese and Chinese car makers are 50% or more owned by Ford, GM, or Chrysler.

The new world order is "global" fellas and thats mostly what all the demonstrations in Seattle and Quebec City were all about.

Some think that we as citizens of the world should have a say in this and that there is more to life than "more".
