Setting the timing by light would be the best way. However, lacking a timing light or timing mark you can set the timing by ear.

Start by bring the engine to operating temperature. Open the throttle to wide open, high idle. Advance the distributor until you hear the RPM's drop slightly. Retard the timing until the RPM's drop again. Now advance the timing to a point mid way between the 2 extremes and maybe even a little farther toward advance than the exact mid point. This should get you very close to the correct timing.
