Don't want to criticize since I don't know the details, but you should at least given the tire store the chance to provide you a tube. If they were out of stock, then maybe run over to TSC if you needed the tire together that day.
One shop I use to work at would charge double on a tube or tire that was not purchased there if a customer wanted it mounted.
Now if the tire store was out of a tube, whole different story.
Finally, sounds like you picked up the right tube, but never opened the box to verify the style of valve stem. There is at least 3 different types I can think of.
