Contrary to popular oppinion, the purpose of the ballast resistor is not to reduce voltage to the coil but current. Too much current in the primary windings of the coil will produce heat which will burn out your coil. I've seen 12v coils used on 6v systems and they can work just fine. You will get a cooler spark but it seems to run these relatively low performance engines well enough. Don't expect good performance on the 1/4 mile. I would leave the 12v coil in place and see what kind of spark you get. If it looks bright and healthy, keep it. If it produces a lazy or dull yellow spark, try a 6v coil. You'd be suprized what works.
