Charlie, you're describing what I was referring to. Shimming behind the bearing to compensate for wear is a common practice but not a good one as Al pointed out. These older engines used to "shim fit" bearings to assure proper tollerance. The shims went between the rod and the cap to allow a little extra space for an otherwise too tight fitting bearing. Plastigage is a squashable plastic material that comes in various thickness and will deform when under pressure. You put a piece between the bearing and the crank, tighten it to torque spec. and remove the cap. If the plastic is squished wider than a given amount, the bearing is too tight and needs a shim to back it off. Your motor manual or the data that comes with new bearings should tell you the clearance margin you're looking for. Take that to the NAPA store and tell them you need Plastigage for that clearance.
