How were you being stupid?? There are signs along EVERY interstate highway in EVERY state warning drivers NOT to stop along the highway unless it is an emergency. Your best bet for doing a driver change would be to pull off at the exit that you say you were next to, and pull into a business parking lot and change drivers there. If you do that, Officer Obie then has NO probable cause to bother you, and you are able to proceed on your way unimpeded.
