I'm glad you posted that. I always thought the "Iron Duke" four had a Chevy SB pattern. Seems I was wrong and it has that odd-ball 2.8/3.1 V6 pattern.
So now, I'm wondering this. The 1998 and newer 4l60Es have front bell-housings that unbolt - unlike the older 4L60s and 700R4s that were one-piece. Can you just unbolt and swap those front housings without taking any of the transmission apart?
When the kid told me his trans was "two-piece" I told him he must be going nuts. But I checked, and sure enough - he's correct. His 99 and the 2001 are both two-piece. I guess I'm behind the times a bit. I'm just wondering if that front "bell housing" is easily swapped?
