GM 4L60E trans swapping ??

My son-in-law has transmission problems in a 1999 Chevy S10 he just bought. 2.2 four-cylinder and 2WD with the 4L60E trans. So, he went to a junkyard and bought a 4L60E out of a 2001 Chevy Astrovan with the 4.3 V-6 (also 2WD).

Anybody know of any definite reason why the van trans won't work in the S10? As far as I know the engine bolt patterns are the same and the wire harness connectors look the same. Other then that, I don't have a clue. Seems the junkyards around here don't use the Hollander Interchange books anymore, and they couldn't tell him if it would fit or not.

I did check part #s from rebuild companines and they show totally different part numbers between the two vehicles.

I know that years back, 700R4s used with four-cylinder engines had a few less clutches then when used with bigger engines. Now, I have no idea. But, even if the van DID have more clutches, not sure what differecne it would make.

I'm ignorant on the matter, but hate to see this kid waste his time if this can't work.

the bell housing are different. they could be swaped. the main differance is in the valve body and accumlators springs. the one out of the astro van has stronger and more acc. springs. the hard parts are the same. you could get the the pan and valve body gaskets and swap valve bodys. should work. hope this helps david

I'm glad you posted that. I always thought the "Iron Duke" four had a Chevy SB pattern. Seems I was wrong and it has that odd-ball 2.8/3.1 V6 pattern.

So now, I'm wondering this. The 1998 and newer 4l60Es have front bell-housings that unbolt - unlike the older 4L60s and 700R4s that were one-piece. Can you just unbolt and swap those front housings without taking any of the transmission apart?

When the kid told me his trans was "two-piece" I told him he must be going nuts. But I checked, and sure enough - he's correct. His 99 and the 2001 are both two-piece. I guess I'm behind the times a bit. I'm just wondering if that front "bell housing" is easily swapped?

You are thinking of the 153 "Chevy II or Nova engine, which had the SBC bellhousing.

From "WIKI":

"The Iron Duke is often confused with Chevrolet's Stovebolt-derived 153 from the 1960s Chevy II, but the engines are entirely different - the Iron Duke's intake manifold is on the passenger side, as opposed to the driver side."

I have a 99 S10, such as you described, with
128000 miles. I pull a trailer with a
riding mower, 50 miles, to mow a cemetary.
I asked a local transmission shop if that would
be hard on the transmission, and they said "That
transmission is THE SAME as in the 1500 full size
1/2 ton pickup".
I"ve been doing it for 5 years with no problems
but my gas mileage goes from 25 down to 21 pulling
the trailer!

Yes. I never owned a Chevy four, except a long time ago in a Chevy II. Never paid much attention ot the newer ones.

I've got a 700R4 in a 1986 Chevy 4WD "mini" diesel motorhome. Weighs close to 8000 lbs. and the trans has 140K miles on it so far. Has 3.08 drive axles which even makes thing worse. I know it's overworked and its GVW rating is exceeded - but it's done fine. Of course, the 6.2 diesel doesn't make an overabundance of power to hurt it.
