I just finished reading a library book called "Blue Latitudes", by Tony Horwitz. He writes about visiting all of the pacific islands that Capt. Cook did in his 1768-1771 around the world voyage. This book written in 2002. He mentions that TAHITI, on his visit, was full of biting flies ans mosquitos. Said it was no paradise to him--a place of tourist traps and prostitues, and if there were any chicks on the beach topless they needed lots of mosquito dope!
