Hi Kirk, I agree with your dad, the additional gloss afforded by using hardener will accentuate the roughness of the tractor's castings. On the other hand, hardener will make the paint more resistant to spot wear, more durable overall, and resistant to fuel, chemicals, etc. Just like cars, motorcycles, airplanes, and anything else you can think of, it's common to over restore old tractors. So, it's really up to you. Personally I'd opt for the additional benefits provided by using hardener and live witht the rougher looking castings. If you haven't already primed it, a heavy bodied primer would help smooth out the castings a little. I've found the PPG DP series of epoxy primers are good for this, and an excellent product overall.
